Mildred D. Taylor
An essay journey through the novel
Chapter I · Introduction
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a novel by Mildred D. Taylor which tells us about the Logan family and their struggles that they face during racism in Mississippi in the Great Depression. The story is narrated by Cassie, and she gradually learns what it is like to live in a world that is so unfair. As the story progresses the family faces many problems but together they are a solid unit and they don't compromise their own sense of self-worth and dignity.
Together they stand — a family that will not let the world break what they carry inside.
Chapter II · Theme
The theme which has to be mentioned above any other in the novel is racism. The Logan family suffers mistreatment just because they are Black, but even though they have their own land and they are hard working. White people are portrayed as feeling of superiority to others and this creates injustice. Learning about what they go through made me think how unfair the world was, and it made me want to make sure history repeats itself.
In a world built on inequality, owning their land was itself an act of quiet defiance.
Chapter III · Theme
Another theme in the story which interested me greatly was family. In all of the situations they face, the Logan family stick together and protect each other. Their papa and mama not only tell them what is right but what's sensible too and Big Ma helps them remember what's most important to the family. I think this is how they managed to get out of some of their problems, it was their family love and commitment that made this happen.
Their love was their armor — the one thing no cruelty could ever take from them.
Chapter IV · Character
Finally I liked the progression of Cassie in the story. Initially, she is rather naïve, and does not completely grasp why others behave the way they do. However as the book develops and she herself experiences discrimination directly she begins to grow and matures. At times even though she is young, she realises that courage does not only mean fighting but also being strong, doing right and accepting hardship and even being a little cowardly at times.
Courage is not always loud. Sometimes it is quiet, steady, and enduring.
Chapter V · Reflection
To sum up, I enjoyed Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry very much and it was a very interesting book that really taught me a lot about respect and courage as well as about family love, integrity, and standing up to injustice. I feel some of the moments in the story were upsetting but it does give an accurate picture of the times. I would really recommend this book as it has a very moving story, still important to learn about today.
This story still speaks — because the need for dignity never goes out of date.
